Switch’s Commitment to 100 Percent Renewable Energy Helps Advance Green Power Market

Las Vegas, November 1, 2021 Switch, Inc. (NYSE: SWCH), (“Switch”), the exascale technology infrastructure corporation, today announced that it has been recognized for the third year in a row by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) National Top 100 List of the largest green power users from the Green Power Partnership (GPP). Switch ranked in the top 10 on EPA’s Top 30 Tech & Telecom List and 23rd on the Top 100 List of companies based on power usage, with a perfect 100 percent ranking for use of green power. Switch’s choice to use green power helps advance the voluntary market for renewables, as well as the development of those sources.

According to the U.S. EPA, Switch’s green power use of nearly 811 million kWh is equivalent to the annual electricity use of nearly 76,000 average American homes. By moving the needle in the voluntary green power market, Switch and other “Green Power Partners” are helping to reduce the negative health impacts of air emissions including those related to ozone, fine particles, acid rain, and regional haze.

“A guiding principle of our Founder and CEO Rob Roy is that data runs the planet, but it should not ruin our planet,” said Switch President Thomas Morton.  “Switch is proud to again receive this prestigious recognition by the EPA and to continue as a leader in making the choice to use green power, eliminating our emissions footprint, and embrace the fact that using green power is smart business.”

“This list of the largest users of green power across the nation is proof that good business practices can also benefit the environment,” said James Critchfield, Program Manager of EPA’s Green Power Partnership. “EPA applauds the leading organizations in the Green Power Partnership’s Top Partner Rankings for their notable commitment to expanding their use of green power and protecting the environment.”

Switch’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond energy use to the precious resource of water. The company and local government partners recently announced the groundbreaking of a sixteen-mile treated effluent water pipeline where Switch’s Citadel Campus in Northern Nevada will use 100% reuse water. That project is expected to come on line in 2023. Additionally, Switch successfully helped develop proprietary technology that increased its water efficiency by over 400%.

Switch was also the first multi-tenant colocation operator in the world to receive all A grades in sustainability from Greenpeace. Switch received the Smart Energy Decisions 2019 Innovation Award for Energy Efficiency, was ranked in the top 10 of global leading companies for its investment in utilizing solar energy in SEIA’s annual Solar Means Business Report, is part of The World Resources Institutes’ Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles, and is an early adopter of the American Business Act for Climate Pledge.

Pipeline to reduce nitrates in Truckee River, protect endangered aquatic life in Pyramid Lake and convert effluent water industrial use in Tahoe Reno Industrial Center

Storey County, Nevada – October 26, 2021– Governor Steve Sisolak joined leaders from every local government in the Truckee River region to celebrate commencement of construction of the Regional Water Improvement Pipeline Project. The sixteen-mile pipeline will deliver 4,000 acre-feet of treated effluent water from Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility (TMWRF) in Sparks to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRI Center). The project led by TRI Center and Switch is the first regional public-private partnership in Nevada history to engage the support of each municipality and agency in Northern Nevada. Partners include, the State of Nevada, City of Reno, City of Sparks, Washoe County, Storey County and Truckee Meadows Water Authority along with several major private sector partners such as the Master Developer of TRI Center, Switch and other leading technology companies. Farr West Engineering is the construction manager for the project.

“This is a true win-win project that will create hundreds of good jobs in the community, while at the same time providing important environmental sustainability outcomes that benefit the residents and businesses along the Truckee River system,” said Governor Sisolak. “I commend each of the government entities that have made this model of regional coordination and cooperation a reality.”

Far-reaching benefits of the pipeline include:

  • Eliminating the infusion of nitrate-rich effluent water into the Truckee River by utilizing it for mechanical use at TRI Center
  • Protects rate payers and allows for growth by deferring a $25 million expansion of the TMWRF waste water treatment facility
  • Allows TRI Center and State of Nevada to provide clean instream flow water, maintaining the flow of the Truckee River
  • Improves the overall water quality to Pyramid Lake by reducing the nitrates into Truckee River and protects the endangered Cui-ui fish
  • Creates hundreds of good paying jobs in the local community

“This important project checks the box on several of our major environmental objectives,” said TMWA Director John Enloe. “This has proven a very innovative solution to an otherwise complex set of needs in the region. We couldn’t be more pleased to see this project get underway.”

“Switch is proud to have been part of this critical infrastructure project from inception through fruition,” said Switch President Thomas Morton. “This innovative solution helps not only Switch, but our 1,300 plus global customers, operate mission-critical technology infrastructure in the most sustainable way using 100% recycled water to protect the area’s precious natural resources.”

Leaders from each of the participating municipalities and agencies also weighed in with their support, including:

Hillary Schieve, Mayor of Reno, Nevada

“Innovation and collaboration have led to the Regional Water Improvement Project. In my time as Mayor, I can’t think of another project that has led to virtually every major stakeholder in the Truckee River region coming together with a single purpose. Reno has played an important role alongside our colleagues and we are very excited to see so many benefits coming to life.”

Ed Lawson, Mayor of Sparks, Nevada

“With water becoming an ever-more precious resource, we have been very mindful to protect the residents of Sparks and all of the neighboring communities throughout the Truckee River region from increased costs. This project masterfully uses new technologies in repurposing waste water and in so doing, off-sets $25 million in rate payer investments in otherwise needed improvements. We are proud to have played a role in bringing this project to life.”

Jay Carmona, Chair of the Nevada Storey County Commission

”Few projects deliver such widespread benefits as does the Regional Water Improvement Project. From protecting the quality of the Truckee to protecting the endangered Cui-ui fish and ensuring that future generations can enjoy Pyramid Lake, this project provides benefits across Storey County and beyond.”

Roger Norman, Master Developer, Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center

“In every project with which I’ve been associated, we start with community benefits at the core. This one is especially meaningful in a time of such environmental importance. We will do good for people, water and endangered species and, at the same time, address a critical environmental need of providing useful water for business without adding burden to public uses.”

Company Provides Preliminary First Quarter 2021 Results

LAS VEGAS, NV — May 3, 2021 — Switch, Inc. (NYSE: SWCH) (“Switch”), the exascale technology infrastructure corporation, today announced that it has launched its Fifth Prime location in Texas. To launch this initiative, Switch has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Data Foundry, Inc. (“Data Foundry”), a carrier-neutral colocation provider, for $420 million in an all cash transaction. The acquisition is expected to close by mid-2021, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas, and with data centers in Austin and Houston, Data Foundry is strategically located in a rapidly growing technology hub which offers a highly favorable business environment for both mature enterprises and early-stage growth companies. In addition, the transaction provides Switch with attractive future expansion opportunities in Texas, which complements and diversifies Switch’s existing geographic footprint and revenue exposure.

The acquisition of Data Foundry expands the Switch portfolio to 16 operational data centers across six locations and will anchor the company’s Fifth Prime data center campus. The acquisition will also add over 400 customer logos, offering robust cross-selling opportunities and the potential for significant customer expansion.

“We are extremely pleased to reach an agreement with Data Foundry and to announce the launch of our Fifth Prime Data Center Campus in Texas,” said Switch Founder and CEO Rob Roy. “The Data Foundry acquisition extends Switch’s national reach and enhances our ability to serve Texas and the Central U.S. region with low latency connectivity, while also providing critical geographic and revenue diversification with robust expansion potential to accelerate long-term growth and value creation.”

“Data Foundry is proud to partner with Rob Roy and the Switch team in this transaction that we believe will carry forward our company’s rich history of innovation in Texas, and will result in tremendous long-term benefits to our customers and all stakeholders of the combined business,” said Carolyn and Ron Yokubaitis, Co-Founders of Data Foundry. “Both companies share a set of core values that emphasize technology leadership, operational excellence, community involvement, and a relentless focus on customer service that will enable a seamless transition of leadership and continued success for years to come,” added Jonah Yokubaitis, also a Co-Founder of Data Foundry.

Data Foundry’s existing portfolio consists of four highly connected, multi-tenant data centers located in Austin and Houston. The Austin campus includes three current facilities with expansion capabilities up to 44 MW at full buildout.

The Houston campus has one existing data center with the ability to support 18 MW of customer power at full buildout. Switch intends to commence development on new data centers in both Austin and Houston at the end of 2021, with the first sectors available for customer deployments in 2023.

The purchase price of $420 million represents approximately 19x estimated 2021 Adjusted EBITDA, including $2 million of projected run-rate cost synergies. Switch management expects the transaction to be accretive to AFFO¹ per share within its first full calendar year after closing. The transaction will be funded through a combination of cash on hand, borrowings under Switch’s fully undrawn $500 million revolving credit facility, or new debt securities.

Switch was advised by Wells Fargo Securities, LLC and Latham & Watkins LLP on the transaction. Data Foundry was advised by DH Capital, LLC and Vinson & Elkins LLP.

¹ A definition of Adjusted Funds From Operations (“AFFO”) can be found in the investor presentation that accompanies this press release.

LAS VEGAS — Switch, Inc. (NYSE: SWCH) (“Switch”) the global technology infrastructure corporation, today announced it has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR certification at its Core Campus in Las Vegas. The certification signifies that the building performs in the top tier of facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.

“The EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification is an important recognition of CEO and Founder Rob Roy and Switch’s long-standing commitment to the highest standards of sustainability in the design and operations of our company,” said Adam Kramer, Switch EVP of Strategy. “Switch is committed to remaining the global industry leader in the development of sustainable technology infrastructure solutions. In doing so, we will continue to be the leader in reduced carbon footprints, increased water efficiency and expanded renewable power resources.”

Commercial buildings that earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Switch has surpassed those numbers for decades with its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its data center facilities.

“Improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s data centers has become more critical than ever as our digital economy expands,” said Jean Lupinacci, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial & Industrial Branch. “Switch’s data centers are among the most efficient in the industry, and we also commend the company for its use of renewable energy in powering its data centers.”

Switch’s patented designs make its data centers the most efficient in the industry, supported by an industry-leading Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rate. Since January 1, 2016, Switch is the largest colocation data center provider powering all of its data centers with 100% renewable energy.

ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 65 different kinds of products, 1.4 million new homes and 20,000 commercial buildings and industrial plants that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA. Over the past twenty years, American families and businesses have saved more than $230 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions with help from ENERGY STAR.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Deputy Chief Kelly McMahill was joined by public officials at a news conference today to discuss preparations for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations that have been scaled down in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

McMahill, along with Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft, Councilwoman Michele Fiore, Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Warren Whitney, and Switch Sr. Vice President Betsy Fretwell discussed preparations to ensure partiers have a safe New Year’s Eve celebration.

The press event focused on reinforcing responsible behavior of celebrants to avoid an increase of hospitalizations after the holiday.

LVMPD, in cooperation with other agencies and community partners, has worked for months preparing for New Year’s Eve and adjusting this year’s festivities to keep the public safe. One major change this year is the cancellation of fireworks show on the Las Vegas Strip.

The press event was held at the Switch Innevation Center. The location will serve as the command center for first responders and other agencies on New Year’s Eve. The state-of-the-art facility holds technology infrastructure that allows law enforcement and public safety to monitor the event, focus on safety and communicate with the media.

  • Freeway off-ramps to the Las Vegas Strip will begin closing at 5 p.m. Roads will begin closing on the Strip at approximately 6:30 p.m. Large vehicles used to block off major intersections around the Strip and downtown.
  • Residents and visitors who will be attending the celebrations must adhere to wearing a mask and the physical distancing restrictions mandated by the governor.
  • Glass bottles, backpacks, or strollers ARE PROHIBITED on the Strip as per county ordinance.
  • Police will respond to any incidents involving illegal parties at rental properties.

The public is reminded to call 911 and report anything that doesn’t look right or looks suspicious. Information about items prohibited during the celebration can be found by clicking on this link: http://www.lvmpd.com/en-us/Pages/TouristSafety/TouristSafety-OrdinancesandLaws.aspx

Groundbreaking reflects strong customer momentum as first 1.3 million square foot building on campus approaches full capacity

LAS VEGAS – Switch (NYSE: SWCH), the exascale technology infrastructure corporation, today announced it has signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract with an existing global e-commerce client to significantly grow its footprint at Switch’s Citadel Campus in Northern Nevada. This transaction follows the previously announced multi-megawatt expansion from a leading developer of advanced semiconductor technologies.

Following these signings, over 80% of the TAHOE RENO 1 facility is committed to clients, including space and power currently sold and future expansion options. Given the ongoing strong demand at the Citadel Campus, Switch is accelerating the commencement of construction on its TAHOE RENO 2 data center and beginning site preparation work for the TAHOE RENO 3 data center.

The e-commerce customer expansion represents an incremental 5 megawatt (MW) commitment across both Switch’s Core Campus and Citadel Campus, which is expected to contribute annualized revenue over $11 million upon full ramp. This customer’s total installed infrastructure commitment is now 30 MW across Switch’s PRIME Data Center Campus footprint.

As previously disclosed on Switch’s third quarter 2020 earnings call, Switch has also completed a 5 MW expansion with a Fortune 100 semiconductor firm specializing in AI, autonomous vehicles, gaming and other high-density computing architectures.

“Accelerating development at our Citadel Campus reflects the strong customer demand for our strategically located, differentiated Tier 5® Platinum enterprise class exascale infrastructure,” said Switch EVP of Strategy Adam Kramer. “This ongoing development means new job creation and economic investment for Nevada’s economy.”

At full build-out, the Citadel Campus footprint has the capacity to expand to more than 7 million square feet and over 600 MW of power capacity. The Citadel Campus is one of four exascale PRIME data center campus locations, a regional hub serving the Northwestern U.S., including San Francisco, Silicon Valley and the Pacific Northwest. The Switch PRIME data center campus locations serve North America’s four primary latency zones.

The additional Switch PRIME campus locations are the Core Campus (Las Vegas, NV) which serves as a hub for the Southwestern U.S., including Los Angeles and Phoenix. The Pyramid Campus (Grand Rapids, MI) serves as a hub for the Northeastern U.S., including Chicago and New York. The Keep Campus (Atlanta, GA) serves as a hub for the Southeastern U.S., including Northern Virginia and Miami.

Reflecting Switch’s continued leadership in sustainability, the expansion at the Citadel Campus will be powered with 100 percent renewable energy, including the largest behind-the-meter solar plus storage project in the world.

Groundbreakings signal strong customer demand as first building on campus approaches full capacity

ATLANTA, GA – Switch (NYSE: SWCH), the exascale technology infrastructure corporation, today announced the signing of a global logistics company as the anchor tenant at Switch’s Keep Campus in Atlanta. Following this signing, the first data center at this campus, “ATLANTA 1” is 72% committed for client deployments – including space currently under contract in addition to future expansion options. Given this signing and the ongoing strong demand at the Keep Campus, Switch CEO, Founder and Chairman Rob Roy commenced a “virtual” groundbreaking for the construction of the second and third data center buildings at the campus.

Initially planned for this past April, Switch’s formal grand opening at the Keep Campus was put on hold due to COVID-19 protocols. However, fueled by robust client demand Switch held the virtual event to celebrate the successful opening and accelerated expansion in Atlanta.

The anchor tenant’s deployment will utilize the majority of the second sector at the ATLANTA 1 facility, contributing contractual annualized revenue of over $6 million, excluding expansion options and usage-based charges for power and telecommunications.

“The demand for enterprise class exascale infrastructure in the Southeastern U.S. technology market validates our strategic decision to locate our newest PRIME campus in Atlanta,” said Switch CEO, Founder and Chairman Rob Roy. “Accelerating development reflects the strong customer need for our differentiated Tier 5® Platinum product offering.”

When the second building comes online in 2022, it will add 50 megawatts (MW) of new capacity, with the next building expected to open the following year, adding another 35 MW of capacity.

“Until we announced our entrance into the market, a Tier 5®, 100 percent renewably powered data center product did not exist in the Southeast,” said Switch EVP of Strategy Adam Kramer. “By locating in the tax competitive environment like Georgia, Switch is clearly growing technology infrastructure capability in the region.”

At full build-out, the Keep Campus footprint will span more than 1.3 million square feet, with an expected overall investment of $2.5 billion in Georgia including Switch’s owned infrastructure in addition to customer expenditures on hardware and other computing resources. The Keep Campus is the fourth Switch PRIME campus in the United States. Switch’s other PRIME campus locations are in Las Vegas and Tahoe Reno, Nevada and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

As part of its long-standing commitment to be a leader in sustainability, Switch is also working with Georgia Power to ensure the Keep Campus uses 100 percent green energy from new, local and renewable energy resources.

ROUND ROCK, Texas; MEMPHIS, Tenn.; LAS VEGAS – Nov. 12, 2020Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL), FedEx (NYSE: FDX) and Switch (NYSE: SWCH) are working together to develop exascale multi-cloud edge infrastructure services. This will bring compute, storage and connectivity to the network edge and help customers overcome performance barriers for latency-sensitive applications.

This initiative will focus on bringing multi-cloud resources and exascale compute power closer to where customers run their businesses. Taking this approach allows organizations to make real-time decisions using capabilities like artificial intelligence, machine learning and 5G.

The companies plan to build technology hubs across the United States that will be capable of supporting multiple cloud environments with Switch’s edge data centers and Dell Technologies’ cloud infrastructure. The hubs will be placed in strategic, secure FedEx locations, with the first underway in Memphis, Tenn. This combination creates the foundation for a consistent experience across multiple cloud platforms.

Switch will deliver 100% uptime at the edge by utilizing the world’s only Class 4 EDGE data centers, the Switch MOD 15, interconnected with Switch’s four PRIME data center campus locations. The data centers’ infrastructure will include Dell Technologies servers, hyperconverged infrastructure, storage and networking products. As the managed solutions provider of choice, Dell Technologies will deliver the cloud solutions and services to support operations.

FedEx will provide the real estate and a portion of the construction and infrastructure costs. As the first consumer of these services, FedEx will provide enterprise end-user technical expertise as the basis for end-state product offerings. These deployments will provide low latency access to high density compute from FedEx operational locations, helping to power the digital innovations introduced by the company as FedEx transforms how data and technology are used in the global supply chain.

This relationship also brings together aligned sustainability visions for Dell Technologies, FedEx and Switch:
• By 2030, for every Dell Technologies product a customer buys, Dell will reuse or recycle an equivalent product;
• FedEx’s global citizenship initiative to decrease the company’s environmental footprint and achieve its corporate sustainability goals;
• Switch’s commitment to running its data center campus locations and edge deployments with 100% clean energy.

“The increasing pace of business is creating a growing reliance on near real-time connectivity to data that resides on the edge,” said John Roese, global chief technology officer, Dell Technologies. “In working with FedEx and Switch, we can create a more local cloud-based environment, offering customers faster access to their workloads and data for greater flexibility and speed.”

“As the size and scale of our network continue to increase, we see more data processing moving to the edge to support the automation and technology required to move more than 16 million packages each day,” said Rob Carter, executive vice president and chief information officer, FedEx Corporation and president and co-CEO, FedEx Services. “The access to multi-cloud edge compute provided by this collaboration with Dell and Switch will allow us to continue reimagining what is possible from our unique position at the intersection of physical and digital worlds.”

“Offering enterprise-class data centers from the Primes to the Prem, paired with Dell Technologies’ products and services suite and FedEx’s world-class physical infrastructure footprint, creates the technology platform that tomorrow’s businesses will need,” said Rob Roy, CEO and founder, Switch. “Teaming up with FedEx and Dell allows the three of us to create and demonstrate how enterprise customers can maintain independent control of their technology futures in the age of hybrid multi-cloud.”

Switch is the only colocation data center technology company to make the Top 10 based on its commitment to solar energy use

LAS VEGAS — Switch (NYSE: SWCH), the global technology infrastructure corporation, today announced that it has again been named in the Top 10 of global-leading companies for its investment in utilizing solar energy in the Solar Energy Industries Association’s (SEIA) annual Solar Means Business report.

Switch is the only colocation data center technology company to be named in the Top 10.

The Solar Means Business Report is produced annually by SEIA and follows solar adoption by businesses across the U.S., ranging from some of the country’s largest and most recognizable brands to small businesses in all 50 states. SEIA is the national trade association for the U.S. solar industry and embodies the innovation and entrepreneurship that defines solar energy.

“It is an honor to again be named as one of the Top 10 industry-leading, global technology companies and the only colocation data center technology ecosystem in the world on the Solar Energy Industries Association’s Solar Means Business list,” said Switch EVP of Strategy Adam Kramer. “This acknowledgement affirms and further cements Switch’s position as a leader in sustainability, which tremendously benefits our customers, the communities where we operate and our planet.”

Switch’s data centers have been powered by 100 percent clean energy since January 2016, and use new, local resources for its renewable energy needs. Switch is currently purchasing nearly 587 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which is enough green power to meet 100 percent of the organization’s electricity use.

“The world’s most recognizable brands are walking the walk when it comes to their clean energy commitments,” said Abigail Ross Hopper, President and CEO of SEIA. “Businesses are choosing solar energy because it can significantly curb their energy costs and add predictability during these uncertain times. We expect that the corporate sector will make greater investment in solar as businesses make and follow through on clean energy commitments to address the climate crisis.”

Switch continues to lead the challenge to expand solar by recently breaking ground on critical projects like Switch Founder and CEO Rob Roy’s Gigawatt Nevada solar energy and battery storage vision. Switch has embarked on the development of one of the largest solar footprint and battery storage projects in the technology industry.

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)’s Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) has secured the future of the Department of Energy/NNSA Emergency Communications Network (ECN) through a partnership project with Switch, a Las Vegas-based provider of advanced data centers. The ECN facilitates exchange of real-time voice, data and video information to manage emergency situations that involve NNSA interests and assets.

Eight years ago, NNSA began exploring options to update the ECN’s infrastructure housed at the NNSS’ Remote Sensing Laboratory at Nellis Air Force Base. Upgrading the existing ECN would mean a multi-million dollar investment on an already dated infrastructure.

In 2017, pursuant to a lease awarded by Mission Support and Testing Services, LLC (MSTS), the management and operating contractor of the NNSS, Switch began to modify the existing Switch Las Vegas Data Center to adhere to NNSA configurations. ECN data was then migrated from RSL Nellis to the new Switch Las Vegas Data Center. The data migration was completed in July 2020.

The NNSA portion of the Switch Las Vegas Data Center meets specifications set forth by the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence for sensitive compartmented information facilities.

“Switch was designed and built to support global missions of agencies like the NNSA,” said Switch Executive Vice President of Strategy Adam Kramer. “Switch provides a safe, resilient and sustainable environment for the deployment of NNSA’s mission-critical data.”

With data migration complete in July 2020, the project came in three months ahead of schedule and $1.36 million under budget at $7.8 million. Teams from emergency management, security, cybersecurity, IT, and procurement from across MSTS and NNSA were instrumental in the project’s implementation.

“It’s a huge milestone,” said MSTS ECN Program Director Dr. Antonio Montgomery. “This will modernize the ECN, enhance our reliability, increase speed and is cost effective.”

The success of the project was recognized in a Sept. 2 ribbon-cutting ceremony with NNSA Administrator Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty at the Switch data facility in Las Vegas. Administrator Gordon-Hagerty has incorporated upgraded infrastructure in her strategic plan for the enterprise.

Emergency Communications Network switch can enable secure, dedicated capability

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) welcomed a new technological capability to exchange secure real-time voice, data, and video information during nuclear or radiological emergencies.  The Emergency Communications Network (ECN) will provide emergency response personnel an encrypted, dedicated network and improve their ability to communicate with internal and external partners.

The ECN is hosted at Switch in Las Vegas.  NNSA Administrator and DOE Under Secretary for Nuclear Security Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty attended a ribbon-cutting on September 2 for the unveiling of the ECN while visiting the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).  The visit was part of a summer tour to the agency’s eight laboratories, plants, and sites nationwide.

“Our emergency responders deserve the fastest and most reliable communications available to effectively respond to nuclear or radiological incidents or accidents,” she said.  “As a steward of American taxpayer dollars, I am strongly in favor of spending less money on NNSA data storage and operations, while retaining a highly secure cyber-environment.”

The ECN will enhance the ability of emergency responders to effectively manage situations that involve NNSA assets and interests.  Examples of data-heavy information include radiation detection and analysis, geographic information systems maps, data telemetry, and nuclear/radiological detection applications, among other response tools.

During the event, Gordon-Hagerty met with representatives of Switch, the company in Las Vegas that hosts the ECN.

The ECN data center migration project is estimated to cost $7.8 million, and was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

The project, Gigawatt 1®, includes the largest behind-the-meter solar plus battery project in the world and will create more than 1,000 new jobs

LAS VEGASSwitch (NYSE: SWCH) and Capital Dynamics today announced three groundbreakings in Nevada, which, along with an earlier phase, will continue Switch Founder and CEO Rob Roy’s Gigawatt Nevada solar energy and battery vision to develop one of the largest solar footprint and battery storage projects in the technology industry.

“In the midst of this unprecedented moment in our state’s history, Switch and its partners are investing $1.3 billion, creating over a thousand new jobs and accelerating Nevada’s leadership in the world’s renewable energy economy,” said Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak. “Projects like this are exactly what the Legislature had in mind when it passed and I signed SB547 to expand investment and jobs in Nevada.”

The massive scale of these phases of Gigawatt 1 will use thousands of solar panels made by First Solar, an American company and battery storage utilizing Tesla Megapack which is manufactured in Storey County, Nevada, at the Tesla Gigafactory.

“With today’s announcement Rob Roy’s Gigawatt Nevada now has four solar with battery storage projects in the state creating nearly 1 gigawatt of energy solutions,” said Adam Kramer, Switch EVP of Strategy. “This project also ensures Switch’s power costs will remain in the 5 cent a KWh range and Switch clients will continue to enjoy low-cost, 100% renewable power for decades to come.”

With these new groundbreakings in Clark and Storey counties, plus the original Townsite development, Gigawatt 1 will soon generate a total of 555 MW of solar power and create 800 MW hours of battery storage. Additionally, the Storey County location will be the largest behind-the-meter solar project in the world producing 127MW and will include a 240 MW hour battery storage system. Behind-the-meter projects generate power off the public grid, placing no burden on legacy public utility production.

“The Capital Dynamics Clean Energy Infrastructure team is delighted to work closely with Switch who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership as a technology company in sustainability both in Nevada and nationwide,” said Benoit Allehaut, Managing Director on Capital Dynamics’ Clean Energy Infrastructure team. “We are also pleased to have collaborated with Tesla to install Megapack energy storage systems on four hybrid solar and storage projects in California and Nevada. This selection was the result of a comprehensive due diligence process. We believe that industry leadership is achieved through scale and innovation and are pleased with the tremendous progress we have made in combined solar and storage plants thanks to Switch and Tesla.”

The integrator of Gigawatt 1 is Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses who will use the Tesla Megapack.

“We are pleased to play a significant role in this groundbreaking initiative,” said Mark Noyes President and CEO of Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses. “The innovative partnership between all parties involved will continue to drive the sustainability agenda for Switch and the State of Nevada.”

The announcement drew praise from leading national renewable energy advocates as well. “Nevada can enjoy the benefit of needed economic growth and strike a critical balance for the environment and precious natural resources,” said long-time clean energy proponent Rose McKinney-James, managing partner of Rose McKinney-James and Associates and Energy Works LLC. “This project represents a major advancement for Nevada and we applaud Switch and their partners for continuing to push the envelope of sustainable business operations and renewable energy.”

Energy shaping, development, construction, asset management & operations of all projects will be led by Capital Dynamics’ affiliate Arevon, who performs these services for more than 5GW of wind and solar assets on behalf of Capital Dynamics.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) applauded the $848,685 in funding awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) toward an overall contract of $1.79 million to demonstrate and validate drone technology in coordination with Nevada’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) test site. The contract awarded to Switch (NYSE: SWCH), who contracted with the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NIAS) will help fund the demonstration and validation of new drone technologies. Switch will leverage hybrid cloud computing mechanisms, data-driven analytics, command centers as well as tens of thousands of simulated drone flights. The funding used for this opportunity was appropriated by Congress through requests by the Senator for funding in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2019.

“FAA’s investment in Nevada’s drone test site will help the Silver State remain at the forefront of drone technology and further amplify our position as the Innovation State,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I’ll continue to work in the Senate to promote Nevada’s innovative tech companies, new job creators and establish the safety and regulatory guardrails that the drone industry needs to unlock all of it’s potential.”

“To be selected as a recipient of a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) contract by the FAA to test the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management System (UTM) at a scale never before attempted is a true honor for Switch,” said Switch Founder and CEO Rob Roy. “In partnership with the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NIAS) and ANRA Technologies, we will leverage our far-reaching Switch AMERICA independent exascale infrastructure platform, including the Switch EDGE data centers, to power the safe integration of UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS).”

BACKGROUND:

Switch was awarded a contract to conduct demonstrations and validation of new drone systems, in association with NIAS, and help establish the guardrails needed to safely intergrate drones into U.S. National Air Space (NAS).

In 2018, Senator Cortez Masto secured a five-year extension in the authorization of the State of Nevada’s FAA-designated UAS Test Site. Language from the Senator’s Drone Safety Enhancement Act, which requires measures to improve drone safety and help fund a public awareness campaign, was also included in the 2018 FAA reauthorization bill. The Senator previously introduced the bipartisan Safe DRONE Act, which advances the development and safe integration of unmanned aircraft systems and supports workforce training programs, in addition to the test site extension and funding request, provisions of which were also signed into law.

The appropriation for the BAA was successfully requested in the Senate, by the Senator, for fiscal years 2019 and 2020.

Earlier this month, the FAA also announced the opening of the drone workforce training opportunities that the Senator got included in the 2018 FAA reauthorization law.

National Award Honors America’s Leading Green Power Users

LAS VEGAS – Switch (NYSE: SWCH), the global technology infrastructure corporation that develops hyperscale data center ecosystems for enterprise colocation, differentiated multi-cloud, and industry-leading telecommunications solutions today announced that it has received a 2019 Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The annual awards recognize America’s leading green power users for their commitment and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation’s voluntary green power market. EPA presented Switch with an Excellence in Green Power Use Award at the 2019 Renewable Energy Markets Conference in San Diego, CA on September 5, 2019.

Switch was one of only seven organizations nationwide to receive an Excellence in Green Power Use Award. The program recognizes EPA Green Power Partners who distinguish themselves by demonstrating leadership in procuring green power from a utility green power product, a power purchase agreement, or a renewable energy certificate (REC) product. Switch is currently purchasing almost 587 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which is enough green power to meet 100 percent of the organization’s electricity use.

“As a leader in sustainability, Switch is proud to receive this prestigious recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,” said Switch EVP of Strategy Adam Kramer. “Switch’s data centers have been powered by 100% clean energy since January 2016, utilizing the practice of using local, new resources for its renewable energy needs, which is smart for our business and smart for our environment.”

In addition, Switch ranks as No. 21 on EPA’s National Top 100 Partners list and No. 9 on the Top 30 Tech and Telecom Partner list. Each list highlights EPA Green Power Partners using the most renewable energy annually as of July 2019. EPA updates its Top Partner Rankings quarterly at www.epa.gov/greenpower/green-power-partnership-top-partner-rankings.

Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally-preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, eligible biomass, and low-impact hydro. Using green power helps accelerate the development of those sources in the United States and advances the American green power market. According to the EPA, Switch’s current green power use of over 587 million kWh is equivalent to the electricity use of about 55,000 average American homes annually.

Switch worked with local energy providers to create new green tariffs to allow businesses to purchase new green power through the utilities. These tariffs ensured the full commissioning of Switch Station 1 and Switch Station 2 solar power plants, with a combined generation capacity of 179 MW in Nevada in 2017 and the operation of Cross Winds Energy Park II, which generates 44 MW of green power in Michigan.

Switch Founder and CEO Rob Roy was the creator of one of the largest solar project portfolios in the world announced by Capital Dynamics, Tenaska Power Services Co. and Switch in February 2018. Rob Roy’s Gigawatt Nevada through its first project Gigawatt 1, aims to generate the lowest priced solar power in Nevada and generate enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes. In July 2019, Switch and Capital Dynamics announced the Townsite Solar Project, the first acquisition of 180 MW of solar in the Gigawatt 1 portfolio.

Switch’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond energy use to the precious resource of water. Switch successfully helped develop proprietary technology that increased its water efficiency by over 400%. Additionally, they are leading a project that will use 100% effluent/recycled water at Switch’s Citadel Campus in Northern Nevada.

Switch was the first multi-tenant colocation operator in the world to receive all A grades in sustainability from Greenpeace. Switch also received the Smart Energy Decisions 2019 Innovation Award for Energy Efficiency, is part of The World Resources Institutes’ Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles, and is an early adopter of the American Business Act for Climate Pledge. Data runs the planet and Switch wants to ensure it doesn’t ruin the planet.

On January 14, 2019, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary, Elaine L. Chao, announced the FAA’s selection of three FAA-designated UAS Test Sites to partner with the agency in the Unmanned Traffic Management Pilot Program (UPP) to include the State of Nevada and the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NIAS).

On 1 August 2019, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) concluded its Unmanned Traffic Management Pilot Program (UPP) with the State of Nevada, Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NIAS), the FAA-designated UAS Test Site, and UPP partner companies.  The UPP was established in April 2017 – per the FAA Extension, Safety and Security Act of 2016, Sec. 2208 – as an important component for identifying the initial set of industry and FAA capabilities required to support UTM operations.  According to the FAA, as they move forward with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and their new industry partners, their primary goal for the UPP is to develop, demonstrate, and showcase enterprise services, using a cloud service infrastructure, which will support the implementation of expanded UTM operations.  These enterprise services will support the sharing of information that promotes cooperative separation and situational awareness.

During the Nevada FAA UPP, UTM services demonstrated included the sharing of flight intent between operators, the ability for a UAS Service Supplier (USS) to generate a UAS Volume Reservation (UVR) — a capability providing qualified USSs the ability to issue notifications to UAS Operators regarding air or ground activities relevant to their safe operation — and the ability to share UVRs with stakeholders (e.g., other USSs and FIMS).

“The State of Nevada has been a leader in the autonomous systems technology industry by connecting the high-tech industry and higher education institutions to create a collaborative partnership,” said GOED Interim Executive Director Kristopher Sanchez. “High-tech industries are coming to Nevada because our innovative efforts help accelerate development and commercial adoption of autonomous systems. Partnering with leaders in the industry has also led to workforce development that is providing Nevadans with the skills needed by high-tech employers.”

“Congratulations to the FAA, NIAS and all of our UAS partners for their successful completion of this game-changing drone program,” said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve. “Our city was honored to be a participant in this program, and I’m proud to be the country’s first Mayor to oversee the unmanned and autonomous deployment of aerial commercial drones over an urban area in downtown Reno. We’d like to thank the national and local media who took an interest, as well as our residents and visitors for their patience and cooperation during the testing period. We still invite our residents to visit Reno.gov/UAS to learn more and continue to offer input on our UAS programs.”

“This was yet another historic Nevada aviation operation demonstrated with an expert, diverse, and highly resilient cluster of drone businesses.  Effectively and safely integrating drones into the National Airspace System (NAS) is going to be key to getting public support of drones flying in an urban environment and integrating this innovative technology into the daily lives of the public.  The UPP was highly successful through the incredible support of the Reno Mayor’s and City Manager’s Office, the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, and town of Searchlight, Nevada-based UAS businesses, Nevada Teammates, and the citizen support we had across Nevada.  As Nevada’s designated agency to manage the FAA Nevada UAS Test Site, we are proud to position Nevada as the global leader in Autonomous Systems (AS) deployment,” said Dr. Chris Walach, Executive Director, Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NIAS) and the FAA-designated Nevada UAS Test Site.

“AviSight is excited to be at the forefront of the FAA UTM testing, working side by side with other innovators in the UAS industry. This testing and demonstration showcase a pathway for full integration of Unmanned Systems into the National Airspace for future Beyond Visual Line of Site operations and airspace deconfliction efforts. Many of these testing efforts will transfer directly into our clients’ operations, using drones to increase the safety and efficiency of inspecting Oil, Gas, and Power critical infrastructure”, said J.B. Bernstein, AviSight CEO.

“We applaud FAA and NIAS for their strategic leadership in this project.  The spirit of partnership and collaboration has afforded us collectively the opportunity to make giant leaps in measured steps toward safe, reliable transport technologies we believe will define the future of flight.” said Stas Mozolyuk, CEO of Avision, Inc.

“Switch is proud to be NIAS’ technology infrastructure provider throughout Nevada supporting successful drone integration into the national airspace and is excited to have partnered with NIAS for this incredible initiative on behalf of the FAA – we look forward to future collaboration with NIAS, leading the charge for autonomous systems testing and deployment across the U.S.” said Betsy Fretwell, Senior Vice President of Switch CITIES.

The Nevada UPP delivered a highly successful demonstration of the UTM drone operations, logistics deployment across multiple Nevada cities, and the integration of drone technology to United States Congresswoman Dina Titus with staff from the Congresswoman and Senator Catherine Cortez Masto’s Office, senior level FAA officials, Governor’s Office of Economic Development Executive Director Kris Sanchez, Clark County Commissioner Mike Naft, McCarran International Airport Authority, Nevada Resort Association, Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority, and Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce.

The Nevada UPP included partner companies to include Fortune 50 companies and Nevada Teammates/Airspace developers: Switch, Uber Elevate, AiRXOS a GE company, Avisight, Avision Robotics, ANRA Technologies, Praxis Aerospace Concepts, Telesis Communications Services, RelmaTech, the City of Las Vegas, City of Henderson, City of Reno, Town of Searchlight, Nevada State College, and Utah State University.

The Townsite Solar Project is part of Gigawatt 1, one of the largest solar project portfolios in the world announced by Capital Dynamics, Tenaska Power Services Co. and Switch in February 2018. Gigawatt 1 aims to generate the lowest priced solar power in Nevada and generate enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes. The Gigawatt 1 concept comes from an initiative called Rob Roy’s Gigawatt Nevada, first proposed by Switch Founder & CEO Rob Roy four years ago.

“This major acquisition moves forward the overall vision of Rob Roy’s Gigawatt Nevada,” said Switch EVP of Strategy Adam Kramer. “Gigawatt 1 creates new clean energy jobs, the generation of new tax revenue for Nevada, important economic diversification, and strengthens our energy independence.”

“We would like to thank the Skylar team for working with us on one of the most complex renewable energy investments we have done to date. Townsite is an important project which is part of our Gigawatt 1 commitment,” said Benoit Allehaut, Managing Director at Capital Dynamics. “We believe this is the first hybrid utility-scale solar and energy storage project serving fixed volume power purchase agreements. Our view is that this type of service represents the future of the renewable energy sector and we are glad to innovate and help the market mature to more customer-focused products and services.”

“We appreciate the relationship with Capital Dynamics and their vision for the Townsite Project.  We look forward to working with Capital Dynamics to complete this project and our continued relationship focusing on innovative, long-term renewable energy deals,” said William O. Perkins III, President of Skylar.

Tenaska Power Services, the leading provider of energy management services to generation and demand-side customers in the U.S., will be the energy service agent for the project, assisting with the sale and purchase of surplus / deficit merchant power, battery scheduling, and energy management.

Capital Dynamics Clean Energy Infrastructure team is one of the largest specialized renewable energy investment managers in the world with approximately $6.1 billion of assets under management and 5.4 GW of gross power generation across more than 100 projects.[1]

Resolution urges adoption of fault-tolerant technology solutions for data centers and edge computing facilities to protect public and private data

Reno, Nev. — The nation’s mayors at their 87th annual meeting in Honolulu, HI unanimously approved a Data Protection at the Edge Resolution sponsored by Mayor Hillary Schieve of Reno, Nevada calling for sweeping improvements to data security and infrastructure. The measure calls for greater protection against the risks of physical intrusion and infiltration of edge sensors associated with the deployment of smart city technologies. Mayor Schieve collaborated with Nevada-based data center developer Switch to create the language for the resolution.

The U.S. Conference of Mayor’s (USCM) resolution encourages the Administration and the U.S. Congress to bolster data security at the edge through deployment of fault-tolerant technology solutions critically necessary for resilience, redundancy, and reliability of data systems. It also calls for protecting public and private data with the highest possible physical infrastructure standards to ensure data centers and edge computing facilities function with the strongest continuity of service and network operations. This measure follows the Data Protection Resolution adopted in 2018 by our country’s mayors to strengthen resiliency and security of data infrastructure at the core.

“As the country’s first Mayor to oversee the unmanned and autonomous deployment of aerial commercial drones over an urban area in downtown Reno, I know first-hand that the incredible growth of data being generated by the Internet of Things and the continued evolution of smart cities requires the most secure infrastructure possible,” said Reno Mayor Hilary Schieve. “As mayors on the front line of technology deployment, we call on the Administration and our Congressional leaders to adopt the highest national standards for the safety and integrity of this data across the nation.”

The 2019 Data Protection at the Edge Resolution was co-sponsored by Mayors Debra March of Henderson, Nevada; John A. Mirisch, Mayor of Beverly Hills, California; and Mark W. Mitchell, Mayor of Tempe, Arizona.

“As our cities continue to embrace the rapid adoption of smart city technology through connected devices, deployment of sensors, autonomous vehicles, smart grids and more, we must ensure the massive growth of data infrastructure is as strong and resilient as possible,” said Henderson Mayor Debra March. “That is why I co-sponsored this resolution calling for a continued focus on bolstering data security and infrastructure at the national level to better protect Henderson and other cities all across our nation from harm.”

“This is the second year that Switch has had the opportunity to work with our nation’s mayors to call for the strengthening of the critical data center infrastructure of our local, state and federal governments,” said Switch EVP of Strategy Adam Kramer. “As cities become ‘smarter’ through the deployment of technology, particularly at the edge, the infrastructure supporting the incredible generation of data must be the best and we commend the mayors for their continued focus on this important part of the growing technology web.”

Resolution, Sponsored by Henderson Mayor Debra March, Stresses National Enhanced Physical and Cyber Data Security Measures

Henderson, Nev.  — The nation’s mayors have unanimously approved a resolution sponsored by Henderson Mayor Debra March calling for sweeping improvements to how private businesses and governments protect data from cyber attacks, physical attacks, severe weather events, and other types of catastrophic threats to data centers. Mayor March collaborated with Nevada-based data center developer Switch to create the language for the resolution.

The U.S. Conference of Mayor’s (USCM) resolution, which was adopted on June 11 at the organization’s 86th annual meeting in Boston, encourages prioritization of funding for data security measures, federal support for local governments in that effort, and reinforcing that the federal government follow its own standards in protecting our nation’s critical data center infrastructure.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors Data Protection Resolution passed unanimously and was supported by 12 other mayors who were co-sponsors including Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, Mesa, Ariz. Mayor John Giles, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Bottoms, Portland, Ore. Mayor Ted Wheeler, and Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan.

“Every day we read headlines about private businesses, local governments and even U.S. naval ship plans being compromised as a result of data vulnerabilities. As a nation, we must prioritize investments in protecting our data from human error, malicious attacks and a lack of resiliency,” said Mayor March.

“As the developers of the world’s only Tier 5® Platinum data centers Switch was pleased to work with the mayors to help develop the policy of the resolution and we applaud Mayor March and her colleagues at the U.S. Conference of Mayors for taking such a strong stand on physical data center resiliency,” said Switch EVP of Strategy Adam Kramer. “Unfortunately, many businesses and governments are unaware of the state of their data center resiliency until something goes very wrong. We look forward to working in partnership with our nation’s mayors to strengthen the critical data center infrastructure of our local, state and federal governments, to draw attention to and attain these physical security data standards.”

“It is time for the leaders of our cities, our nation’s mayors, to start this conversation and gain greater funding for such critical programs and infrastructure with our congressional leaders,” said Mayor Pugh.

The data protection resolution calls for mitigation measures that provide redundant systems, resilient and renewable energy sources, industry-leading data protection standards, and advanced data center construction standards.

The measure highlighted projected losses from cyber hacks, data breaches and lost productivity due to lack of secured data at nearly $8 trillion over the next five years. Meanwhile, the U.S. Government is expected to spend $10 billion annually to protect data. Global spending on data security efforts is expected to grow by more than 30 percent to about $134 billion by 2022.

Criterion uses Switch data centers to provide colocation services for its work in Las Vegas.  These data centers are powered by 100% renewable energy.  From 2016-2017, Switch retired over 1,892 Geothermal and Solar Renewable Energy Credits (REC) on behalf of Criterion Systems, making our energy consumption 100% green at Switch’s data center facilities.

A REC is proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource and delivered to the energy grid. Each REC is independently tracked and verified and represents the environmental attributes of the power produced from eligible renewable projects and may be sold separately from the electricity produced from the source. These renewable energy credits comply with Greenpeace’s principles of locality, additionality, and sustainability, and were generated by Nevada solar farms and geothermal power plants in 2016-2017.

“Being a good corporate citizen is important to Criterion. To us, this means giving back to the communities in which we work and live,” said Promod Sharma, CEO of Criterion.  “Making sure our data centers run on renewable energy is the responsible thing to do.”

“We are pleased to work with forward-thinking companies like Criterion to help them achieve their sustainability goals,” said Adam Kramer, Executive Vice President of Strategy. “We embrace Criterion’s shared vision for sustainably running the internet.”

Once constructed and operational, The Keep Campus in Atlanta is expected to be the highest-rated data center ecosystem in the Southeast region. Atlanta will serve as a Switch PRIME hub for the Southeastern United States.

“We believe that the ‘Switch Bill’ will propel Georgia into the number one state in the Southeast for technology infrastructure and data center development,” said Switch executive vice president of strategy Adam Kramer. “Switch was pleased to lead this effort as part of our commitment to advocating for policy that drives economic development in the states where we call home. We applaud the Georgia General Assembly, the bill sponsors Rep. Trey Kelley and Sen. Steve Gooch, and Gov. Deal for enacting this forward-looking policy.”

Switch’s clients include Amazon, eBay, Shutterfly, FOX, News Corporation, Amgen, Lionsgate, Zappos, Intuit, DreamWorks, Intel, MGM, HP, PayPal, Hulu, Boeing, Time Warner Cable, Warner Brothers, Verizon and hundreds more.

Switch is employing its long-held practice of hiring local workers to build The Keep Campus, from site preparation throughout the development of the massive project. Hundreds of additional local workers are expected to be employed at the site for Switch and their clients during the project’s build-out.

As part of its long-standing commitment to being a leader in sustainability, Switch is also working with Georgia Power to ensure its campus uses 100 -percent green energy from new, local and renewable energy resources.

Partnership with STEAM Non-Profit Teaches Students Critical Skills for Future Workforce Readiness and Tech Talent in Nevada

Inspired by the value of FIRST Robotics’ mission to help young people combine the STEAM education skills of creativity, invention, engineering and team collaboration, Switch was the Lead Sponsor of the recent Las Vegas Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition held on March 22-24th at Thomas & Mack Center. Stella and Rob Roy, Switch’s Team Omega and Governor Brian Sandoval attended the competition, demonstrating the critical importance of the mission of FIRST.

FIRST® Robotics is Switch’s key community initiative. Rob Roy and Switch became involved with FIRST because Switch sees the critical importance of increasing awareness around careers in technology, particularly among underrepresented groups such as women and minorities. Also, as the world moves into the “Age of Analytics” defined by AI, big data, machine learning and next-generation technologies, Switch’s support for FIRST provides the strongest foundation to create a workforce development pipeline of tech talent in the state of Nevada. The creative, team-building and leadership skills incorporated into the FIRST teams ensures that in a technology-driven world, we never lose the “humanity” in that technology.

Beyond a strong financial commitment for FIRST, this season many members of Switch gained hands-on experience with the FIRST teams.  Many dedicated their time and talent to coaching teams, providing inspiration and judging the competition.

This hands-on commitment was visible at the highest levels from Switch CIO Missy Young, who serves on the FIRST® Nevada Board of Directors. Missy shared an inspirational message at the regional competition and challenged the larger business community to embrace and engage with FIRST as part of their commitment to the future of Nevada.

Switch’s SVP of Colocation Services Cindy Zimpfer, delivered an uplifting message to students at the season kickoff and joined Joshua Ewing SVP of Construction on the judge’s panel of this year’s competition. Chelsea Phillips, Director of Switch Works mentored the Sierra Vista High School team and Security Supervisor Wesley Dye supported students at the Southwest Career and Technical Academy. Many others volunteered their time to make this year’s event a success.

The 2018 Las Vegas Regional competition included participants from 14 Las Vegas high schools and 30 additional teams from Utah, California, Arizona and Germany. Nationally, more than 91,000 high school students on 3,650 FIRST Robotics Competition teams in the U.S. and 27 countries worldwide, competed in the 160 Regional and District Events.

Nevada can be proud that 5 FIRST Nevada robotics teams will be heading to the World Championship in Houston, TX from April 18-21, 2018. Robotics teams in the FIRST LEGO League Jr, FIRST LEGO League, and FIRST Robotics Competition levels will represent Nevada in the World Championship competition.

Licensing Agreement includes Right to Sell Switch’s Highly Efficient, Patented Exterior Wall Penetrating Multi-Mode HVAC to Others

LAS VEGAS — Switch (NYSE: SWCH), the global technology solutions corporation that is powering the future of the connected world®, today announced that Munters has elected to participate in Switch’s utility patent licensing program.  Switch’s licensing program extends the benefits of its patented Exterior Wall Penetrating Multi-Mode HVAC units known in the industry as the Switch TSC.

Munters, a global leader in energy efficient air treatment and climate solutions, has been one of Switch’s leading global suppliers of the patented TSC 500, part of the Switch MOD® facility designs. Munters versatile and rapid response to Switch’s requests has set them apart from others. Both parties view the license agreement as an opportunity to explore future strategic customer/vendor opportunities.

“We are excited about the opportunity to further our successful collaboration with Switch,” said Neil Yule, President of Munters’ Data Center business. “We are very pleased to be able to offer Switch’s innovative TSC 500 exterior wall penetrating HVAC units to our clients. It’s hard not to admire the efficiencies of the TSC 500 and the striking appearance, iconic to Switch’s name and brand.”

Rob Roy founder and CEO, began inventing Switch’s technologies in 2006. Switch has obtained regular patent allowances from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for Rob Roy’s innovative designs. The license with Munters covers issued patent claims for Switch’s Exterior Wall Penetrating Multi-Mode HVAC technology as well as Switch’s Multi-Cabinet Hot Aisle Containment Chimney Pods and trade secrets related to the same.

“Munters has been a great partner and is well positioned to be a leader in deploying Switch’s sustainable solutions to meet the massive growth of the internet of everything,” said Switch founder and CEO Rob Roy. “This license to Munters further demonstrates the unique and valuable role Switch’s patented technologies can play with leaders in the data center industry.”

Historically, licensing of Switch’s patents has been reserved exclusively for its customers until Switch began its broader patent licensing program in 2016. Since then, Switch has begun licensing its technology to others, including Schneider Electric and to Berkshire Hathaway’s electric utility, NV Energy.

“The licensing of Switch’s technology by third parties further validates Rob Roy’s inventions and status as one of the world’s leading data center designers, with now more than 400 issued and pending patent claims said Sam Castor, executive vice president of policy. “We believe that many companies in the data center industry are using Switch’s patented designs without permission and look forward to expanding Switch’s licensing portfolio as we evaluate our patent enforcement and licensing options.”

Program Matches Energy Used by Large Businesses with Clean Sources

JACKSON, Mich., March 8, 2018 – General Motors and Switch are the first participants in a new Consumers Energy program to help large businesses use large renewable energy sources. Both companies are now matching 100 percent of their electric use at key operations in Michigan with wind-generated power.

The energy used at Switch’s Pyramid Campus, a 1.8 million-square-foot data center campus in Grand Rapids, and General Motors’ Flint Metal Center and Flint Engine Operations is matched entirely with energy produced by Cross Winds® Energy Park II, which went into operation this year in Tuscola County, in Michigan’s Thumb.

“Switch and General Motors are leading the way for companies that want to operate efficiently in a competitive environment, yet also make and meet commitments to our planet,” said Garrick Rochow, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president of operations. “We look forward to providing clean energy that will power Switch, General Motors and other large businesses that choose Michigan to locate and grow.”

Sustainably running the internet has been a bedrock principle of Switch since founder and CEO Rob Roy started the company in 2000. “It was a pleasure to work with Consumers Energy to continue Switch’s commitment to using 100 percent new, local renewable energy resources to power our data centers,” said Adam Kramer, Switch executive vice president of strategy.

Consumers Energy’s new renewable energy program for large businesses was approved last year by the Michigan Public Service Commission.

“Corporations have a leadership opportunity to help accelerate and scale renewable energy, making it more accessible and affordable for everyone,” said Dane Parker, General Motors’ vice president of sustainable workplaces. “The Consumers Energy program will help General Motors meet its commitment to source 100 percent renewable energy at all global operations by 2050, while reducing emissions in our Michigan communities and making the grid greener.”

Switch, General Motors and other businesses that choose to participate help defray the costs for new renewable energy sources. “The collaboration among a tech company and an automaker demonstrates that environmental leadership can be driven from all business sectors,” Rochow said.

Today, Consumers Energy provides 10 percent of customers’ energy use from renewable sources. Consumers Energy recently announced that more than 40 percent of the energy it produces will come from renewable sources and energy storage by 2040.

The energy provider’s new clean energy goals also include reducing carbon emissions by 80 percent and no longer using coal to generate electricity by 2040.

Capital Dynamics to Develop Gigawatt 1 the First Gigawatt Solar Project Portfolio

LAS VEGAS — Switch (NYSE: SWCH), the technology infrastructure corporation that is powering the future of the connected world®, together with Capital Dynamics, today announced the construction of the single largest solar project portfolio in the United States.

Switch CEO and Founder Rob Roy’s Gigawatt 1 solar project will be built in Northern and Southern Nevada.  The project will produce among the lowest priced solar power in the world and generate enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes.  The Gigawatt 1 concept comes from an initiative called Gigawatt Nevada, first proposed by Rob Roy three years ago.

“The foundation of Gigawatt Nevada is that Nevada should harness the sun the same way Alaska harnesses its oil to significantly benefit all Nevadans,” Rob Roy said.  “Nevada enjoys the best solar window in the nation and so we Nevadans should not only be using solar for ourselves, but exporting it throughout the Western U.S. to create new jobs, tax revenue, economic diversification, and raise energy independence.”

The assets will be owned and developed by Capital Dynamics, the second largest owner of solar projects in the country[1].  Gigawatt 1 anchor tenants will include Switch, and several of the Switch CORE® clients that currently partner with Switch for data center and telecommunication services.  In addition, multiple private and public sector access customers within Nevada and outside the state are already in negotiations to join the project.  Customers who will receive renewable energy from Gigawatt 1 for substantially less than the cost of receiving renewable energy from NV Energy (Nevada Power) under its green offering called the Green Rider Tariff:

“This is the kind of opportunity that only very rarely presents itself,” said Benoit Allehaut, Director at Capital Dynamics.  “After hearing Rob Roy’s vision to build gigawatts of solar in Nevada, this was an opportunity we couldn’t pass.  We see a natural partnership to transform not just Nevada, but the entire Western electric grid.  Switch is the leader in cooperative purchasing of telecom capacity and can take a similar leadership role in purchasing and distributing green energy.”

The project will be built with American-made solar panels, utilizing Capital Dynamics’ many partnerships, and will utilize local Nevada labor.  Switch and Capital Dynamics will negotiate with their EPC contractors and I.B.E.W. 357 and LIUNA 872 on contract terms to build Gigawatt 1.  The project portfolio is projected to create 1,250 construction jobs.

Switch and Capital Dynamics will ensure Nevadans benefit from the project.

Greenpeace Weighs-In

“Climate scientists have repeatedly warned that we must move to renewable energy as rapidly as possible, but many monopoly utilities continue to hold us back from making this transition,” said Gary Cook, Senior IT Sector Analyst and Energy Campaigner at Greenpeace.  “Gigawatt 1 shows that when Switch and other leading companies don’t take ‘no’ for an answer, they can work together and kick open the door to large scale sources of renewable energy that are better for the planet, and better for the economy in Nevada.”

Greenpeace awarded Switch all A grades, in its most recent Clicking Clean Report, noting Switch “scored among the highest for any class of company and is the definitive leader among colocation operators for its efforts to transition its data center fleet to renewables as fast as possible through a combination of renewable energy procurement and aggressive advocacy.”[2]

STEAM Non-Profit Teaches Students Problem Solving, Teamwork, Inspired Robot Design and Building

Highlights from the 2017 Las Vegas Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition

LAS VEGASSwitch (NYSE: SWCH) and FIRST Nevada have teamed up again to demonstrate the value of STEAM education and careers in these fields, through robot design and creation for the 2018 Las Vegas Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition. Switch, a global technology solutions corporation has provided a major sponsorship for the second year in a row to support and enhance the FIRST® program in Nevada.

FIRST Nevada is ecstatic that Switch has selected FIRST® as their key philanthropy initiative,” said Angela Quick FIRST Nevada Regional Director. “We are truly grateful for this partnership and our aligned vision to move STEAM education forward in the state of Nevada.”

The FIRST® Robotics Competition is a program that challenges high school students – working with mentors – to design and build a robot, over an intense six-week timeframe, to compete with an original robot in the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. This year’s competition in Las Vegas on March 22-24, will include 45 high school teams with participants from Nevada, Arizona, Utah, California, Wyoming and Germany. This season, more than 91,000 high school students on 3,650 FIRST Robotics Competition teams, in the U.S. and 27 countries worldwide, will compete in 160 Regional and District Events.

FIRST POWER UPSM, the 2018 FIRST® Robotics Competition game, finds teams trapped in an 8-bit video game. Each three-team alliance has three ways to help defeat the boss: Tipping the scale or alliance’s switch in their favor to earn points, exchanging power cubes for power ups (force, boost, and levitate) to gain a timed temporary advantage during the match, and climbing the scale tower to face the boss. The alliance with the highest score at the end of the match, which includes autonomous and teleoperated periods, defeats the boss and wins the game.

FIRST® was created by Dean Kamen to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people, their schools and their communities. Kamen and Switch CEO and Founder Rob Roy share a vision of attracting the young stars, inventors and futurists who are training their minds and creative energies for ever-changing careers.

“It is so critical that businesses find, inspire and ultimately hire these young creators and inventors from FIRST® Robotics,” said Missy Young Switch Chief Information Officer and Board Member for FIRST Nevada. “These young minds meld the power of invention and creativity with technology through STEAM education to solve challenges in business, in our communities, and in daily life.”

By Rafael Soltanovich, Vice President, Software Development at Hulu

It takes a lot of energy to connect millions of viewers across the United States with the content they love. With a tech team of more than 620 Hulugans powering our library of 75,000+ on-demand episodes and a live TV service that ingests over 1000 streams daily, we’re always looking for ways to better our service for viewers while also reducing our impact on the environment. To accomplish this, Hulu is partnering with Switch, one of the largest renewable energy-powered data center providers, to migrate our existing data centers to a new renewable energy facility in Las Vegas.

When we launched Hulu with Live TV in May, we migrated our live data assets to the public cloud platform through Amazon Web Services (AWS), with the remainder now being migrated to the Switch data centers. This move allows us to scale in a way that not only minimizes downtime for our customers, but also provides a stable, direct connection to AWS, allowing it to support the growth of our existing cloud platform.

Our new, 100 percent renewable energy facility spans 2.4 million square feet across 12 buildings, providing the capacity of up to 55kW per rack. In addition, the Switch facility is located outside of a fault line in a Seismic Zone 1, ensuring that Hulu will remain operational even in the unlikely case of a natural disaster such as an earthquake. The migration will be complete in February of this year.

Powering millions of stable and secure streams a week is no easy task. By moving our data center to a facility that eliminates 265,000 carbon tons of emissions from the environment (that’s equivalent to more than 50,000 cars off the road for a year!), we’re able to ensure our viewers can reliably stream The Handmaid’s Tale or Monday Night Football while moving towards green and sustainable operations with our data centers.

The Patent License Reflects a Growing Relationship between Switch and Schneider

LAS VEGAS — Switch has licensed its patented hot-aisle containment and cooling technology known in the industry as the Switch T-SCIFs® and the Switch TSCs to Schneider Electric.

“We are excited to conclude this important license, clearing the way for us to incorporate Switch’s innovative hot aisle containment and cooling technologies which will complement Schneider’s product offerings and efficiencies,” said Christopher Hanley, SVP of Data Center Systems for Schneider Electric. “This announcement further strengthens our long and growing relationship and provides another opportunity for data center clients to benefit from the combined innovation from Switch and Schneider Electric.”

Schneider has been one of Switch’s leading global suppliers of equipment for Switch MOD facilities for many years. These offerings include Switch’s patented tri-redundant power system, power distribution systems and Power PODs, central to the Switch WDMD® and Switch MOD® facility designs. Both parties view the license agreement as an opportunity to explore future strategic customer/vendor opportunities.

Rob Roy began inventing Switch’s technology in 2006 and Switch has obtained regular patent allowances from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for Rob Roy’s innovative designs since that time. The license covers all issued patent claims for Switch’s 100% Hot Aisle Containment Chimney and Exterior Wall Penetrating Multi-Mode HVAC technology. Switch’s patents have historically been reserved exclusively for Switch’s customers, until Switch began its broader patent licensing program in 2016. Since then, Switch has begun licensing its technology to others, including to Berkshire Hathaway’s electric utility, NV Energy. Switch believes the licensing of Switch’s technology by third parties further validates Rob Roy’s inventions and status as one of the world’s leading data center designers, with more than 350 issued and pending patent claims.

“The industry continues to recognize the benefits of Switch’s technology to reduce data center carbon footprints and improve server deployment densities and efficiencies” said Samuel Castor, Executive Vice President of Policy for Switch. “Switch’s Policy team licenses Switch technology to those best situated to help lay the foundation for the internet of everything, like Schneider Electric, and we will vigorously defend against unauthorized use. We are honored to offer Schneider Electric a license to these patents and we are pleased that Schneider finds Switch’s patents unique and valuable.”

Technology giant Switch provides critical data ecosystem infrastructure to power new University of Nevada, Reno cluster

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada, Reno today unveiled development of a new, user-driven, high-performance computing cluster that will boost research capacity and better support the latest research applications such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, computational biology and neurosciences, bioinformatics and big data.

The significant new cluster will offer 30 times more computing power than the University’s existing, high-performance system. It will put the University’s computing infrastructure among those in place at many of the nation’s leading research institutions.

The project funding is supported by the University along with funding through the State of Nevada Knowledge Fund, which is facilitated by the Governor’s Office for Economic Development and awarded to the Nevada Center for Applied Research (NCAR), and a donation from long-time University supporter and groundbreaking researcher Mick Hitchcock.

To drive the technology and research advancement, the University partnered with Switch, a global technology company and leader in the design and operation of advanced data centers. Switch is providing more than $3.4 million in critical technology infrastructure support services through space, power and security for five years at Switch TAHOE RENO, The Citadel Campus.

“High-performance computing is critical for modern research and scientific discovery,” University President Marc Johnson said. “The impact of this will be multi-dimensional; it will allow for faster analysis and exchange of large scientific datasets. It will contribute to deeper discovery across a range of research disciplines University-wide and to development of industry partnerships.”

“Making Nevada the most connected state and driving economic development through technology and data analytics are critical priorities that Switch shares with the University of Nevada, Reno,” said Switch Executive Vice President for Strategy Adam Kramer. “This collaborative project will cement the University’s commitment to strengthen its status as a top-level research university and its ability to partner with the private sector.”

“We are again seeing individuals, organizations and industry pull together to enhance the capabilities of the University, our faculty and students, and our region’s economy,” Johnson said. “The technology infrastructure support of Switch sets the foundation, and project support through GOED and Dr. Hitchcock further demonstrates a shared vision to advance the global competitiveness of Nevada.”

Known as Pronghorn, the new research-computing cluster is named after the American antelope, the fastest mammal on the North American continent. It is expected to be available for beta-use in late fall 2017 and fully implemented by January 2018.

Pronghorn will have impact across fields of research and scholarship, from the natural and social sciences, to the technology, scientific, engineering and mathematics fields.

“Increasing our computational and modeling capability will allow faculty to better exchange, analyze and store data, and more effectively collaborate at an international level,” said University Vice President for Research and Innovation Mridul Gautam.

Dell EMC has been selected as the vendor for the high-end support hardware that will allow high-speed network communications and connectivity.

“The idea is to build an infrastructure with enough capacity so we have what we need with additional ‘head room’ for future development,” said University Vice Provost and Chief Information Officer Steve Smith.

Industry access to Pronghorn will be coordinated through NCAR, the applied research and development technology center that makes the facilities, equipment and talent of the University available to industry through customized, fee-for-service contracts. Partnerships developed through NCAR demonstrate a tangible connection to the University, such as a research collaboration. NCAR is also supported through the Knowledge Fund.

“Each of the partners behind this initiative understands that investment of their talent or resources in our infrastructure – in this case, our high-end computing infrastructure will be leveraged in many ways,” Gautam said. “This is a tangible milestone toward this University’s commitment to continue to enhance the research enterprise.”

Tier 5 Sets New Standard for Excellence in the Data Center Industry

LAS VEGAS — Recognizing shortcomings in the way data centers are evaluated, Switch is introducing a new proprietary Tier 5 Data Center Standard that it expects will be the most comprehensive standard in the industry.

Tier 5 Platinum not only encompasses the resiliency and redundancy in other data center ratings systems, but also evaluates more than 30 additional key elements, such as long-term power system capabilities, the number of available carriers, zero roof penetrations, the location of cooling system lines in or above the data center, physical and network security and 100-percent use of renewable energy.

Switch’s Tier 5 Platinum standard injects critical parameters to enhance availability and reliability for the colocation industry. Switch’s industry background and experience provides a unique position to evaluate and develop data center standards. Switch has more than 260 patented and patent pending claims and pioneered 100-percent Hot Aisle Containment Rows and Exterior Wall Penetrating Multi-Mode HVAC units: two of the most important design strategies to creating a resilient and efficient data center.

In 2014, Switch became the first and only carrier-neutral colocation facility to be certified Tier IV Gold by the Uptime Institute. Then in 2016, Switch became the only colocation provider to accomplish Tier IV Gold certification – twice. For each facility, Switch obtained certification in both Design and Facility categories. Switch also obtained Gold status for Operations. Although now outdated, Switch went through the certification audit – an industry leading – two times to further reinforce Switch’s technology leadership and add transparency to its product and service offerings.

Industry experts and users alike understand that major threats to data center uptime include water damage, reliance on too few telecommunication carriers, being located in a high-risk geo zone, and inadequate physical and network security. These mission critical elements are not being evaluated in other data center rating systems. Switch believes this lack of transparency and holistic relevance makes it difficult for CTOs, CIOs and data center managers to understand the deep dive differences between colocation product offerings when selecting a provider. Switch is introducing this new Tier 5 standard in an effort to reduce the lack of transparency and enhance the reliability of data center rating standards.

“The original standards were created for legacy data centers in the early 1990s,” said Samuel Castor, Switch’s EVP of Policy who helped formalize Switch’s new Tier 5 standards in partnership with Switch’s engineers and under the direction of Rob Roy. “The spectrum of data center options has greatly expanded since their creation. Customers can now choose between a broad array of options, from in-house, to carrier, to colocation, cloud or managed service offerings. The common core of each of these offerings is more than just power and cooling. The underlying infrastructure must contemplate security, connectivity, sustainability and much more. To be helpful and relevant, our industry standards must be expanded as well.” Castor continued: “A tidal wave of technological change has been cresting. When the original standards were developed by Hank Seader, Ken Brill, Pitt Turner, back in the early days, no one envisioned the world would evolve as much as it has. Switch’s Tier 5 standard focuses on improving the holistic coverage, transparency and accountability of such an important and mission critical part of all of our daily lives, the infrastructure that supports the Internet of Absolutely Everything.”

Switch is the world’s first Tier 5 Platinum data center, telecommunications, and data security provider.

Switch plans to use the Tier 5 Platinum standard as the first step to create the new and open, Data Center Standards Foundation (DCSF). DCSF will be an independent, non-profit standards body led by leading technology companies and industry experts.

The DCSF approach will be in contrast to other “for profit” entities that sell its certification services to customers, while also offering consulting services to meet those standards – creating conflict of interest and independence questions.

The DCSF’s non-profit status will remove the conflict of interest inherent in a standards body acting for-profit. It will also provide a low-cost certification program for enterprise and colocation data centers. The DCSF’s mission will be to increase truth and transparency in the data center industry by publicly posting its standards and vigorously defending against misuse of its classifications. Current standards concepts let some companies fraudulently misrepresent their data centers as a certain tier or quality, when they are not. This has become a problem that has plagued the data center industry around the world.
